Experienced Los Angeles County Taxation Attorney
I am Richard A. Block, a Woodland Hills estate tax attorney with 45 years of experience. I provide legal counsel and representation in taxation law, estate planning, business law for individuals, businesses and charitable organizations throughout Southern California. As a certified tax specialist and former U.S. Treasury attorney in the office of the chief counsel to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), I use my experience and skills to the maximum benefit of my clients.
Preserving Assets Through Effective Estate Planning
Drawing on my years of experience, I advise clients on estate planning considerations involving property tax, income tax, pension plans, charitable giving, gift taxation, insurance trusts, special needs trusts, dynasty trusts and other tax and family concerns. The federal law for 2011 and 2012 currently provides that each decedent is given a tax exemption of up to $5 million. I help clients take advantage of this statute and other rules by assisting them in making informed decisions about how to maximize the estate passing to their heirs.
"Anyone may so arrange his affairs that his taxes shall be as low as possible; he is not bound to choose that pattern which will best pay the Treasury; there is not even a patriotic duty to increase one's taxes." - Judge Learned Hand in Helvering v. Gregory, 69 F.2d 809,810 (2d Cir. 1934), aff'd 293 U.S. 465 (1935).
"A taxpayer has no legal obligation to pay more taxes than the law requires." - Leritz v. Connell, 51-1 US Tax Cases (6th Dist., Mo. 1951).
At my firm, clients work only with me throughout the process of drafting effective estate planning documents. I use my skills to ensure that the clients' property intended for loved ones and other beneficiaries is protected from unnecessary estate taxes and other challenges.
Defending Business Investments
I also provide counsel for businesses and non-profit organizations in business formation and tax-related matters. My goal is to help my clients reduce their business tax obligations so as maximize their investments, while keeping within legal tax guidelines.
"The power to tax involves the power to destroy." — Chief Justice John Marshall, 1819
Unfortunately, the IRS often takes a heavy hand when it suspects people or businesses of fraud. I provide dedicated representation for those who are under scrutiny by the IRS for suspected tax crimes. Working in close consultation with a criminal lawyer, I leave no stone unturned in defending clients accused of tax fraud.
